Application Information and Requirements

1. All applicants must meet Our Membership Requirements.
    
   
   
2. Membership is open to all persons with a direct ancestral connection to the Bras d'Or Indians of Cape Breton as found in the 1871 Cape Breton census.
    
   
   
3. Proof of Bras d'Or Indian ancestry is the responsibility of all applicants.  
   
   Each applicant must prove a direct connection to their Bras d'Or Indian ancestors as outlined in the Membership Requirements either through birth records, baptismal records, marriage records, census records, and other colonial documents available through the Public Archives of Nova Scotia. 
   
   
   If you are linked to an existing member of the Bras d'Or First Nation Community who can confirm your blood line.  There is a space on the application to indicate which family member is an existing member.  
   
    
   ALL new Applicants MUST complete a Pedigree Chart,  whether or not a family member is already an existing member and MUST include it with their application.  Applications received without a Pedigree Chart or proof of ancestry will be returned to the applicant.
   
   
4. Mail in your Application: 
   
   Download and print the Application Form and the Pedigree Chart.  Fill in all applicable sections.
   
   Note:
   All applications which DO NOT include a Pedigree Chart will be returned to the applicant.  It is not essential to fill out every line on the Pedigree Chart, but it is important that as much information as is known be included especially in regards to your Bras d'Or Indian Line.
   
   
5. Please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope with your application.  This will be used to issue you a new Membership Card upon approval of your application.
   
   
6. Please take a moment to check your form for accuracy and completeness,  and that your form is signed and dated.
   
   
7. A $ 25.00 administration fee (Certified check or money order) is required with each application to cover the administrations costs associated with processing and issuing a Membership Card.
   
   
8. Mail completed application, pedigree, copies of certificates and administration fee to:

9. Upon approval, applicants will be added to the Tribal Register and issued an acceptance letter along with their band card. 
   
   
10. Please notify the Band of any mailing address, telephone number and/or email address changes.  Thank you for your help.
