Hello to all members and viewers of Bras d'Or First Nation.
First, apologies for the lateness of this update.
In early July we had the honour of meeting privately with Mr. Mark Davis, Atlantic regional representative from Indian Affairs along with Mark Eykings' assistant.
Not only does Mark Davis represent Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, he also taught Native Studies and Maritime
History at St. Mary's University. Also an educator and director of Social and Economic Development. Well versed on the Treaties and rights of the descendents of Native Ancestry and played a integral part in Newfoundland with assisting the Qualipu band in gaining recognition with Indian Affairs.
We brought to the table our vision and history of the area with documents, pictures and oral reports. We strongly expressed the fact that we only want what Newfoundland got. No more, no less. He encouraged us to keep gathering history of the area and directed us toward the proper individuals who can also help us as we continue to work towards gaining recognition.
In the near future, we hope to be setting up some workshops and we hope all who can attend these workshops do so as they will be informative and help all who attend gain more knowledge into obtaining their status.
On with more recent events.
As some of you may know, the Bras d'Or First Nation sign on the highway just above the Groves' Point turnoff was vandalized and any debris was removed from the area except a couple of pieces. Sketchline has made another sign to replace the old one. It should be installed this week. It is a shame because this action cost the members $513.00. We would like to ask if anyone from the area witnesses any vandalism of the new sign could they please report it to the RCMP.
Also, our site had been experiencing some unsavoury comments recently. These comments which were posted under false names were removed and will continue to be removed in the future. This is not the forum for such activities.
The Guest Book is just for comments on the site, not for
personal issues or complaints regarding the Band Council or any persons of the membership. If you have personal comments please email Chief Raymond and together we can resolve any issues via email, not the site.
Also please note the link to our new member forum. We encourage everyone to register.
Since our last report there were 20 more applications processed.
We hope to have a meeting very soon so we can provide a financial report and further updates. We hope to have more information for those who attend.
